General Plumbing: What to Check Before Calling a Plumber

By A R Plumbing & Heating

A plumbing symptom can have more than one cause. A dripping tap, for example, is different from water appearing beneath a sink, even if both seem to be small problems. Before arranging general plumbing help, a few safe checks can help you describe what is happening and show whether the issue affects one fitting or more of the property.
Start by locating the symptom
Look for the first place you can see water, not just the wettest patch. Water can run along a pipe or cabinet base before it drips, so the visible puddle may not be directly below the source. If you can inspect the area safely, note whether the water appears around a tap, a pipe connection, a drain connection or somewhere less accessible.
Do not reach into a confined space, move heavy appliances or remove panels to find a leak. If water is close to electrical fittings or equipment, do not touch wet surfaces or switches. Keep clear and seek appropriate help.
If there is an obvious leak and you can reach the main stopcock (the valve that shuts off your water) from a dry, safe position, you may be able to turn off the water. Only do this if you know which valve it is and can operate it without force. Do not twist an unfamiliar or stuck valve: forcing it can cause further damage.
Check whether it is one fitting or a wider problem
Think about where the problem occurs. Is it limited to one tap, toilet or sink, or are several taps, toilets or sinks affected? Does it happen whenever a particular fitting is used, or is water present even when everything is turned off? These differences can help distinguish a local fault from an issue affecting a wider part of the plumbing.
For a tap problem, note whether the drip continues when the tap is fully closed, or whether the leak appears around the base or pipework. Avoid taking the tap apart. The visible symptom alone does not confirm which part needs attention, and dismantling a fitting can make it harder to control the water if something comes loose.
For a leak beneath a sink, check whether it appears after running the tap or when water drains away. Do not put your hand into a wet cabinet if you cannot see what is there, and do not tighten fittings blindly. Instead, note the timing and where the water first becomes visible.
Notice what still works
Record whether the cold water, hot water or both are affected, and whether the issue is in one place where water comes out or several. If the concern is with hot water, note whether it is isolated to a tap or seems to affect more than one outlet. Do not open or adjust heating or hot water equipment to investigate a plumbing symptom.
These observations are useful because they describe the pattern rather than guess at a cause. A brief note, or a photograph taken from a safe position, can help explain what you have seen when you contact a plumber. Include when you first noticed it and whether anything changes when a fitting is used.
Know when to stop checking
A visual check is useful; a repair is a different matter. Leave pipework, concealed leaks and any fitting you cannot safely reach to a plumber. Stop if water is spreading, a valve will not move easily, or you are unsure how to turn off the water supply. Do not use sealants or improvised fixes to hide a leak, as they can obscure the source without resolving it.
The same principle applies to a plumbing improvement. Before work is arranged, be clear about what you want changed and mention anything that may affect access, such as pipes hidden behind a cover or a crowded cupboard. You do not need to diagnose the fault yourself. Accurate observations are more helpful than a confident guess.
